Each month, the Jacket Backers, Rockwall High School’s Booster Club selects student athletes who are nominated by their coach for Jacket Athlete of the Month. For the month of February, Ava Whitaker, Brad Binns, Madelyn Weir, Ainsley Hergert, Grant Morris, Claire Lowrey, Ethan Stark, Omar Boutari, Ashley Minor, Anya Land and Roxy Thompson were each nominated by their coaches and selected as Jacket Athletes of the Month.
Ava Whitaker, Junior Swimmer was nominated by Coach Partenheimer. “Ava broke her own 100 butterfly record multiple times this year. She broke it at regionals, then at the state meet. She also won the 100 Butterfly at the state meet this year. She could be the first female state champion for swimming.”
Brad Binns, Junior Swimmer, nominated by Coach Partenheimer went on to add, “At our regional meet, Brad broke the 500 Freestyle team record twice. He broke on the preliminary session on Friday, then during the finals session on Saturday. I was one of the oldest records for the boys.”
Madelyn Weir, Senior Center Middle for Girls Soccer, was nominated by Coach Garcia. “Madelyn is a captain on the varsity & a 4 year letterman. She is someone who leads by example and is a role model both on and off the field. She strives to get better in each practice and game, and encourages her teammates to do the same. Madelyn makes the effort to talk to each of her teammates and be there not just as a teammate but as a support system for them. Madelyn is one of the best to come out of the LJ Soccer program!”
Grant Morris, Sophomore Boys Golf, was nominated by Coach Watkins. “Grant is a leader by example. He shows up and works hard every day. In our last tournament he led the Jackets by shooting a 2 under par round of 70. Grant has 2 1/2 more years as a Jacket and I am glad to have him on our team. He is a pleasure to coach and I am looking forward to seeing him shoot these scores on a more consistent basis over that time.”
Claire Lowrey, Junior High Jumper for Girls Track was nominated by Coach McCrary. “Claire is a defending Bronze medalist from last season's State Track and Field Meet. This past Saturday in our first meet of the season, Claire won the high jump with a jump of 5'11". This jump was also good enough to break the record that she broke and set last season of 5'8.5". Not only did Claire break the record she also has the #1 jump in the nation as well. Claire has set her goal on winning the gold medal at this year’s State Track and Field Meet. So far she is on path to do so. ”
Ethan Stark, Senior Pole Vaulter for Boys Track was nominated by Coach McCrary. “This past Saturday Ethan won the pole vault at our first meet of the season by bettering his Personal best by almost a foot. Ethan vaulted a height of 14'6". This is something that Ethan has had his sights on for a very long time. He was kind of stuck in the 12'6" to 13'6" range and was getting frustrated. Ethan always worked hard and studied his videos on how he could improve. Ethan has not put a cap on his potential and I know that he will reach his personal goals by the end of the season.”
Omar Boutari, Senior Forward for Boys Soccer was nominated by Coach Bowles. “Omar is a senior captain and leader. He is our leading goal scorer. Overall he leads by example. Just in February alone he has 5 goals and 1 assist. Omar is someone that can change the game at any time. He is a dominate threat with speed and strength. We are very excited about what is to come the rest of the season.”
Ashley Minor, Senior Forward for Girls Basketball was nominated by Coach Brewer. “Ashley is one of the toughest, most competitive, best charge-takers I know. She has competed on the varsity team for 4 years. She helped lead her team to the playoffs this season for the 20th consecutive year and win a Bi-District Championship. In February, Ashley was selected as the Defensive MVP of District 10-6A. She led her team with 38 charges this season. She is a great leader that exhibits the Lady Jacket Way wherever she goes.”
Anya Land, Sophomore All-Arounder Girls Gymnastics was nominated by Coach Tyson. “Anya is a second year varisty gymnast who came to us last year from South Africa. Anya is always working to improve her skills every day. She is always positive in any situation, she represents our program with pride and is someone all her teammates can look up to in and out of the gym. Anya has improved so much in a very short amount of time, we can't wait to see what the future hold for her.”
Roxy Thompson, Junior Outfielder for Softball was nominated by Coach Campbell. “She is a standout in our program not only because of her talent, but she has an incredible amount of humble confidence, leads our program by setting an example of what hard work looks like, and never makes excuses. She is quick to pick up her teammates and does whatever she can to help her team be successful. She is one of our leaders in RBI's so far this season, is batting a .571 after 28 at bats, is leading the team with 16 hits and no strike outs. She is a great young woman and we are so proud of her!”
