At the end of each sporting season, the Texas High School
Coaches Association (THSCA) alongside with the Texas Army National Guard select
student-athletes, managers and trainers as members of the THSCA Academic
All-State leaders.
The list for the 2019-2020 THSCA Academic All-State Football
Team was released Monday. Jake Edwards (Elite #45), Carter Chase (1st
Team #29), Derek Harris (1st Team#64), Joseph Schaefer (1st
Team #32), Tyler Ashworth (2nd Team #20), Landon Gibson (Honorable
Mention #65), Matthew Hejny (Honorable Mention #12) and Kade Klinkovsky
(Honorable Mention #83) each earned this academic honor.
Student-athletes juggle everything from athletic pressures
to school pressure on a regular basis, so the THSCA and the Texas National
Guard like to make sure the hard work put forth by these students does not go
unnoticed.
The students are selected by a point system in which
students receive points for excelling in the following categories: GPA, class
rank, and ACT/SAT score. Based on the score, they are then placed into teams
with the highest team being the Elite Team. Other teams include: 1st Team, 2nd
Team and Honorable Mention.
In order to make the short list of Elite Team members,
students must be an athlete, student trainer or manager in good standing with
the team, have good moral character, be a senior and have an overall grade
point average of 92 or above between ninth and twelfth grade.
In addition to helping Rockwall High School Yellowjackets
advance to the 6A Division 1 Texas State Semifinals, these young men also excel
in the classroom. Congratulations to all
of these student-athletes.
