On Friday Nights, everyone in the stands comes to watch the
boys of the gridiron battle it out for Saturday morning accolades. Stories are written about summer practices
and college visits. Articles highlight
star players going down with an injury.
College coaches roam spring practices sidelines hoping to convince the
5-Star Athlete to commit to their program.
However, if you investigate a large program like Rockwall
High School or ask a Coach, one will find out that there are a lot of people
who help keep a football program or any other athletic program strong.
A group of these individuals are our student athletic
trainers. These trainers show up to
practices early, and stay after the last whistle is blown dismissing the
players. They wear multiple hats during
the games from equipment manager to comforting an injured player. The students spend time learning how to
prepare a player to be available when their number is called as well as
monitoring exercises allowing the athlete to get back on the field to play.
These trainers travel, and spend as much time on the field
as most of the players. In some cases
they put in a lot more hours of preparation than athletes. Yet, they don’t see their name in print on
Saturday mornings. They won’t hear their
names called out on Friday Nights.
Cheerleaders don’t cheer for them and the student body will not watch
them perform at a school Pep rally.
The Jacket Backers and Rockwall High School Athletic
Department would like to give special recognition to Chris Laudermilk who is a
senior this year.
“Chris goes above and beyond every day even during this
offseason” explains Coach Liz Stavos. She adds, “He is always on time or early,
quick to get the task completed and finishes his tasks without being
asked. He is hardworking and has a great
attitude.”
On behalf of Rockwall High School Athletic Department,
Jacket Backers and all of the players you have helped this year;
Congratulations to Chris Laudermilk on being recognized as being the Trainer of
the Month. You are truly part of
Rockwall Athletics and an instrumental part of the athletes’ success!
